  • July 07 - World's First Island Fitness Resort - How To Stick With It - Put It Into Action: Jay Johnson's Boot Camp Fitness, which operates in 14 Texas locations, including Dallas and Fort Worth, is typical of the boot camp experience: Logs, tractor tires, sandbags, and firehoses, as well as an innovative drill he calls the "SUV push," are all incorporated into Johnson's camp, which you're supposed to attend at least three times a week, for 60 minutes, over the course of a month. No workout is repeated, all are tailored to your fitness level, and, apparently, the bellowing is gentle. Not surprisingly, Johnson spent three years as an army drill instructor, and at his camp, according to the website, they "only yell motivating, positive affirmations, uplifting quotes, and we convince, not confront." As more and more boot camps open across the nation, finding one close to you shouldn't be too tough. Just Google "fitness boot camp," and that should do the trick.

After hours of practice the girls thought the night was over, but their athletic trainer, Jay Johnson, a retired Army master sergeant, had a final mental drill to run the ladies through. "The U.S. Army and the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders demonstrate many of the same core values," said Mr. Johnson. "You have to have integrity, loyalty, honor, pride and be willing to work together as team." After pumping up the team with one of his traditional Army drill sergeant motivational speeches, he introduced them to several of his friends - the Golden Knights.

The series is produced by TAB Fitness Media, whose parent label Music Access is distributed by E1 Entertainment. Ultimate Cardio, Ultimate 3x30, Ultimate Abs and Ultimate Body Vol. 1 each are intense workouts led by retired U.S. Army Drill Instructor Jay Johnson and his wife and co-trainer Lin Johnson. Johnson is the official trainer of the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders and the team's end zone flag runners. The Johnsons have created a challenging workout based on their experience in the military. The routines borrow the U.S. Army's system of fitness, with cardiovascular, endurance and muscular training that include drills, calisthenics, cadence movements, optional weights and accountability. These titles are the first four of 12 total titles in the series. Each DVD and Blu-ray contains a three-week workout at the beginner, intermediate and advanced levels, as well as tests to complete before moving on to the next level. The videos also come with a 50-page workout manual and log book that contain pictorial instruction and pages to track the user's progress. "If this works for the military, then why can't it work for the civilian population?" Jay Johnson said.

  • August 07 - Body Building Magazine - Ab Fab - How to get those cheerleader abs - Sure, the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders dance for 3 1/2 hours each Sunday during the football season, but that alone doesn't keep them in shape. The rest of the week includes three-hour daily rehearsals and an unforgiving exercise regimen. Designed by Ret. U.S. Army Sgt. Jay Johnson, who now runs Boot Camp Fitness, the squad's "butts and guts workout" targets just what it says it does. The exercises also boost strength and endurance. "This is functional training, not just to look good," he says. Johnson recommends warming up with a pyramid of push-ups and bicycles. Start with 20 push-ups, flip over to your back and, with your legs in the air, mimic the movement of cycling. Do it 20 times. Next, do 19 push-ups and 19 bicycles, then 18 of each, continuing the pattern until you're down to 1. Remember, that's just the warmup. After that, it's on to the actual workout, which Johnson recommends doing four times a week, in addition to 30-60 minutes of cardio exercises each day, resistance training and eating five or six lean, healthy meals each day.

  • July 07 - Dallas Morning News - Fit in the City - "Boot Camp workouts are a Major Motivator" - Constant variety and WHY THAT'S IMPORTANT: A new workout awaits you in each class. It's fun. You never get bored, and you're always challenging yourself. Boot camps emphasize variety, which prevents routine. Instructors agree that your body will quit responding if you keep repeating the same exercise. To accomplish constant change, they alter the tempo and intensity of basic moves. They rotate participants through different cardio- and weight-training stations or engage an entire class in different group exercises. "We never do the same workout twice," says Jay Johnson of Jay Johnson's Boot Camp Fitness. Mr. Johnson spent 20 years in the military before retiring. "Routine is the enemy."
